Built for tall glass and a long west-facing afternoon
Northeast Fresno has the biggest windows in the city. Around Woodward Park and up through the Bullard corridor the houses were built to look outward — two-storey great rooms, stacked entry glass, sliders running the width of the back of the house. It is a lovely way to live for eight months of the year and an expensive one for the other four.
The problem is almost never that a window looks bare. It is that a wall of glass is loading heat into a room the air conditioning is already struggling with, and a good share of it sits ten or twelve feet up where nobody is realistically going to reach a wand twice a day.
So the two things that get fitted most on this side of town are plantation shutters, which handle light without looking like a temporary fix, and motorised shades on the high runs, which close before the room heats up rather than after somebody notices it is uncomfortable upstairs.
We take the measurements and hang them ourselves. The fit is our problem, not yours.

Why northeast windows cost more to live with
The homes up here traded small punched windows for large panes and open plans. A single two-storey west elevation off Woodward Park can carry more glass than the entire street-facing side of a house in the older parts of the city, and all of it is aimed at the hottest part of the day. Fig Garden gets some help from mature trees, but shade from a sixty-year-old oak is not a strategy you can specify.
The fix is layered rather than dramatic. Cellular shades put a trapped pocket of air against the glass, which is exactly where the cooling is losing. Solar roller fabric on the tall windows cuts glare without blacking the room out. Shutters hold light back on the openings you look at every day and want to look finished.
All of it gets measured in person, because a great-room window that is half an inch out at the top is a very visible mistake at that size. Nothing is sold online here and nothing is quoted from a photograph.

Can you cover a two-storey great room window?
Yes, and it is one of the more common jobs around Woodward Park. We measure off a ladder, build to the opening and hang it ourselves. Above normal reach we will usually suggest motorising it, because a covering nobody can operate stops getting used within a month.
Are motorised shades actually worth it, or is it a gadget?
On high west glass the timing is the whole point. A shade that closes at two in the afternoon on a schedule keeps heat out before the room takes it on. One you have to reach with a pole gets closed at six, once the damage is done.
Do shutters help when we sell?
They are the one covering that tends to be treated as part of the house rather than an accessory, because they are built to the openings and stay when you go. We will not put a number on what that is worth — anyone who does is guessing.
Will shutters fit an arched entry window?
They will. Arches, angles and bay corners get built to the shape rather than boxed off square. We template the opening at the measure visit.
